KANZA ILÓSHKA - Kaw Ceremonial Man Dance
|
When: Thursday, August 4th, 2005 (Day Before Kaw Powwow)
Where: Kaw Nation Powwow Grounds
All Kaw Tribal Members, family, and friends were welcome. Kaw dancers and visiting dancers were welcome - traditional ceremonial straight dance regalia (men only).
Sponsored by the Kaw Men's Committee with support from the Kanza Museum Board, Kaw Powwow Comittee, and the Kaw Nation of Oklahoma.
The Kanza Ilóshka Dance is the contemporary revival of the ancient Kaw warriors' society dances. Primarily a man's ceremonial dance, the Iloshka is a time for the Kaw people to set aside any differences and gather together as one people to celebrate and reinforce our Kaw heritage and lineage; to honor our veterans and those tribal members who are currently serving our country on military assignment; to honor and remember those who have recently passed; to celebrate the outstanding achievements of tribal members; and to promote the continuum of Kaw heritage and culture to current and future generations. The drum is the heart of the Iloshka dance, both literally and symbolically, and is the conduit to communicate with Wakánda. It is the symbol of the Kaw people and retains our songs, history and traditions.
